We’ve rounded up a list of museums located in downtown Charleston to help you get started.

Gibbes Museum of Art. The Gibbes Museum of Art, located on Meeting Street, celebrates the power of visual art and imagination. To promote creativity, The Gibbes presents six to eight special exhibitions a year, to provide a platform for the general public to engage with art in new and exciting ways. In addition to the special exhibits, spectators can enjoy a plethora of programs, classes and workshops.

International African American Museum. The International African American Museum opened its doors to the public just over two years ago on June 27th, 2023. In a little over two years, the IAAM has told the stories of the African American experience across generations, informing those about the triumph and trauma behind such a powerful movement of people. Visitors can experience storytelling through a multitude of mediums, from artifacts to exhibitions.

The Charleston Museum. Founded in 1773, the Charleston Museum teaches and informs spectators all about the South Carolina Lowcountry through a series of collections, exhibitions, educational programs, and events. Take some time to learn from each exhibit, or explore through a more hands on approach through a tour of the Joseph Manigault House.

South Carolina Historical Society. Located in a National Historic Landmark Building, the South Carolina Historical Society Museum is the state’s oldest and largest private archive, featuring interactive exhibits with rare books, manuscripts, and visual materials. Learn all about the people and movements that shaped the history of the state of South Carolina, situated in Charleston’s historic Fireproof Building.

Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry. The Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry provides an excellent opportunity for children to learn, play and problem solve through a series of innovative experiences. Located in downtown Charleston on Ann Street, the museum offers a series of exhibits, camps, field trips and parties for children of all different ages.
