Unlike most major cities in the U.S., Charleston is quite accessible by foot, for those who enjoy walking as their form of transportation. When exploring downtown, you’ll almost always see a group of people attending a walking tour. There are many different tour options, such as a Historic Tour, Architecture Tour, Ghost Tour, Window Box Tour and Garden Tour. With all of the history in the Holy City, there’s no doubt that each tour will teach you something new and interesting. Whether or not you wish to be your own tour guide, we’ve got some tips and tricks on how to make the most of your time exploring downtown Charleston!
Start with a coffee. Take it from a local, the best time of day to explore the cobblestone streets of Charleston is earlier in the morning or later in the evening, before the heat and humidity of midday take place. If you’re an early riser and want to start your day with a walking tour, we recommend fueling up for your adventure at one of the many local coffee shops; Clerks Coffee Company, Bitty and Beau’s Coffee, The Black Door Cafe and Harken Cafe are all great options, just to name a few.
Explore South of Broad. Once you’ve acquired your beverage of choice and you’re ready to take on the day, head on over to South of Broad. Located on the tip of the Charleston peninsula, South of Broad is an exclusive and historic neighborhood. With fine architecture and dazzling details, this neighborhood exudes all of the southern charm that Charleston is known for. It offers an impeccable location, views of the water and is just steps from renowned restaurants, shopping, art galleries and so much more. Additionally, the history of this neighborhood has remained intact from its origins in 1880, as the city of Charleston actively participates in preservation efforts.
Take in the views at White Point Garden. After you’ve admired all of the homes in South of Broad, you’ll come across White Point Garden. This picturesque setting is at the southern tip of the peninsula where the Ashley and Cooper Rivers meet. The 5.7-acre public park is filled with grand live oak trees and provides the perfect place to stroll and picnic, all while taking in the breeze from the Battery. Don’t forget to make your way up East Bay Street to Waterfront Park and snap a photo in front of the Pineapple Fountain, one of Charleston’s most famous landmarks.
Experience the charm of Rainbow Row. From one Charleston landmark to another, you’ll make your way over to the iconic Rainbow Row from the Pineapple Fountain. Rainbow Row is a row of pastel-colored historic homes located on East Bay Street that is popular with visitors and locals alike. This iconic row of homes has become an iconic symbol of Charleston throughout all different forms of media and art.
End your walking tour with a bite to eat. Now that you’ve worked up an appetite from your self-guided walking tour, we recommend celebrating your tour with lunch. Charleston’s historic district is home to a plethora of exquisite dining options. For the seafood connoisseur and a stunning view of the Charleston Harbor, we recommend dining at Fleet Landing. If Southern comfort food is more your style, try Slightly North of Broad or Magnolias.
