The Lowcountry rang in the New Year with record low temperatures on January 1st. According to WCSC, temperatures hovered in the mid-thirties, nearly 10 degrees cooler than the previous low record of 45 degrees.
The National Weather Service reports that a heavy mixed precipitation is expected today, with total snow accumulations of up to 2 inches, with higher amounts possible. Many schools and businesses have closed in affected areas.
You’ll likely be considering how to protect your home during these freezing temperatures. To avoid bursting pipes, plumbers recommend dripping your faucets and opening the cabinets under your sink to let the warm air in. Be sure to know where your water shut-off is located in case of an emergency. Outside, many of your plants will need to be brought indoors or covered to shield them from the cold. Citrus plants are especially vulnerable, as are roses, vegetables, and tropical plants.
Thankfully, the Charleston forecast is predicted to warm up, showing 50-60 degree weather early next week. Stay safe and warm if you are out and about today!
